A Tribute to Björk: Concert and Workshop Series

November 10-11, 2017

Contact: Chris Teal, IfCM co-Director (509) 230-0688, info@ifcmusic.org

The Institute for Creative Music Collective will present two concerts and a workshop on November 10th and 11th featuring music from their new album, A Tribute to  Björk, released on October 27th (Outside In Music). The Institute for Creative Music was formed in Rochester in 2011 by two Eastman School of Music alumni, drummer Chris Teal and trombonist Nick Finzer, and has since toured throughout the United States presenting educational programming, original music, and jazz-influenced arrangements of contemporary artists including Prince, Radiohead, and Imagine Dragons. Now living and working in Northwest Arkansas and New York City, respectively, Teal and Finzer will return to upstate New York in November for performances at the Pausa Art House in Buffalo and Bop Shop Records in Rochester, joining pianist Nick Weiser, saxophonist Doug Stone, and bassist Kyle Vock. They will also present a three-hour creative music workshop at the Harley School in Rochester for students age 11-18 with an interest in improvisation and composition.

An award-winning composer, arranger, and trombonist, Nick Finzer released his recording debut as a bandleader with Exposition (Outside In Music) in 2013, receiving the prestigious American Society of Composers and Performers (ASCAP)’s Herb Alpert Award. His 2015 album The Chase (Origin Records) was released to rave reviews and a feature article in Downbeat Magazine; it peaked at #6 on the JazzWeek Charts. Famed trombonist and mentor Wycliffe Gordon called Finzer “a new voice [in] the pantheon of upcoming trombone greats in the making,” and Finzer can be found touring the globe not only with his own projects, but as part of YouTube sensation Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox.

Chris Teal has presented workshops and performances throughout the United States, including the NYU Impact Conference and TEDxFlourCity. Raised in Spokane, WA, Teal now teaches drum set and popular music at the University of Arkansas. While living in Rochester from 2007 to 2016, Teal performed with the IfCM Collective, the Dave Rivello Ensemble, the Mighty High and Dry, the John Nyerges Trio, and the Silver Arrow Band.

The doors open at 6pm, and the cost is $7 per person for general admission and $5 per person for students with ID.
