Denton Jazz Workshop Camp:

June 9-13th & June 30-July 4

Creativity thrives in the summertime! To build on the fun and hard work in our school year workshops the IfCM is launching full-week workshop camps this summer. Under the co-direction of Chris Teal and Grace Frarey, students will gather for full day (9-4pm) or half day (9-1pm) sessions and have the option of joining for session 1 (June 9-13), session 2 (June 30-July 4), or both. Previous DJW members and new participants are encouraged to register. No audition necessary, but make sure the student is comfortable with the general info requirements listed below. Students will be invited to perform with the IfCM Collective on June 12th at Patterson-Appleton Arts Center (7pm) as well as at Emily Fowler Central Library on June 14th (2:30pm). GENERAL INFORMATION: Open to all ages 11 and above. Students will be grouped together based on age and experience. All instrument and voice types are welcome! 

DATES:

  • Session 1: June 9-13th, (optional) performances June 12th, 7pm at Patterson-Appleton Arts Center and June 14th, 2:30pm at Emily Fowler Central Library in Denton. 

  • Session 2: June 30-July 4th.

LOCATION: Workshops held at Program Director Chris Teal’s house in Denton. Address will be provided ahead of the workshop (you can also email chris@ifcmusic.org for the address).

REGISTRATION: Please register and pay through this link to reserve your spot. Unless noted otherwise, there is still space available.

TUITION: Full day (9am-4pm) tuition is $500, half-day (9am-1pm) tuition is $300. Both options include a non-refundable $30 registration fee. 10% discount for siblings. These classes run on sliding scale payments. All are encouraged to participate regardless of ability to pay. The IfCM wishes to be 100% inclusive of all interested people and our programming is made possible by donations from members of the community. Pay what you can to make it possible for us to provide the event to all, regardless of ability to pay (please see options in our tuition document or email chris@ifcmusic.org).

PAYMENT: Pay through credit card in our store,  PayPal Giving Fund, Zelle (christopherteal@gmail.com), Venmo (@christopher-teal-2), or check. If paying with Zelle, Paypal, or Venmo, email chris@ifcmusic.org for a registration link after paying. Email chris@ifcmusic.org for sliding scale/sibling discount links.

REQUIREMENTS/ELIGIBILITY:

  • All instruments and voice types are welcome. 

  • At least 1 year experience on your instrument. Students should be able to play most major scales and a two-octave chromatic scale on their instruments.

  • Open to learning music without notation.

  • Open to performing and recording. 

  • Able to attend camp sessions at the dates, time, and location listed above.

  • Jazz and blues newbies welcome—no audition required!

  • Full-day students should plan on bringing a packed lunch.

CANCELATION POLICY:

Full payment is due upon registration. Partial refund available for cancellations made in writing by June 10. No refunds available after June10. 

Intro to Band Camp

This camp is designed for students who are interested in trying out a variety of instruments in preparation for school band and their own enjoyment. Under the co-direction of Chris Teal and Grace Frarey, students will gather for full day (9-4pm) or half day (9-1pm) sessions and have the option of joining for session 1 (June 9-13), session 2 (June 30-July 4), or both. Students with 1 or more years of instrumental experience who want to solidify their musicianship, technique, and ear training/theory skills will also benefit immensely from this camp. Students will be able to try several instruments and learn foundational songs, patterns, and technique. Instruments include:

  • Clarinet

  • Saxophone

  • Flute

  • Trumpet

  • Trombone

  • Piano

  • Mallet percussion

  • Drums and auxiliary percussion

  • Drum set

  • Guitar

  • Bass guitar

All instruments are provided, but students are encouraged to bring their own if they have them.

The goals of the Institute for Creative Music are for everyone to learn and practice skills that they can use throughout their lives, whether they want to do music professionally, maintain a high-quality leisure activity, or just make fond memories. This summer program is the next step that will allow us to share student curiosity and help us discover new goals as individuals and within a community. We look forward to sharing the process and results!

We believe our workshops have the greatest impact in a multi-day residency format.
